Can cats see better in the dark than light. When light enters the eye the rays hit the retina in both humans and cats a layer of tissue toward the back of the eye housing the photoreceptor cells. Cats can see in the ultraviolet range which appears dark to humans. Humans have only four retina rods that are sensitive to light whereas cats have twenty five. Their eyes are capable of collecting and reflecting even the smallest bit of light allowing them to see in a darkened room so long as it isn t pitch black.

Cats need some light in order to see but they only need one sixth the amount of light humans do. All retinas have two types of photoreceptors rods and cones. Cats won t be able to see in the dark in the rare event that absolutely all light is blocked out but their sight is much more advanced than that of humans for all of their night time adventures. To see in dim light cats have more rods than cones.

The reason cats can see better than humans in the dark is because of the way their eyes are made. Cat s can t see in the dark the way their reputation suggests but they can definitely see better than you when there isn t much light. The iris of a cat s eye can open wide to let light in. Worth the mention though that cats do not see in absolute darkness they do require very little light to see but in absolute pitch black they can still navigate pretty impressively using hearing paw pads and air currents on their whiskers which they have on their face sides and backs of front legs.

Cats can t see in the dark but they can detect light seven times dimmer than humans can. They sacrifice color vision for improved night vision. Their eyes are intelligently designed.
